Legacy is not age

A legacy system is not simply an old system. It is a system that blocks important change, depends on rare knowledge, creates operational risk, or makes every adjustment too expensive. Old and stable software can remain useful. Recent software that cannot evolve has already become legacy.

Rewriting everything is tempting because it promises cleanliness. It is also dangerous because it replaces known risk with a long, expensive project full of discovery.

The signal that modernization became urgent

Modernization grows because legacy cost shows up in the business. Mordor Intelligence estimates the legacy modernization market at $29.39 billion in 2026, up from $24.98 billion in 2025. The number signals real pressure, not architecture fashion.

The practical signals are clear: a small change takes weeks, integration requires spreadsheets, security cannot fix dependencies, vendors no longer support the technology, and no one can explain critical parts.

Rewriting is the last step, not the first

Before rewriting, map modules, integrations, data, business rules, users, incidents, and maintenance cost. Then choose a strategy: encapsulate, extract a module, replace with SaaS, create an API, migrate the database, or rewrite a critical part.

A full rewrite should enter only when the whole system blocks value and when the company can truly live with two worlds during transition.
