Quantum computing: what ordinary companies need to know today
Quantum computing does not demand product urgency for most companies yet. It already demands cryptographic inventory and risk awareness.

The first impact arrives through cryptography
For most companies, quantum computing will not change the product tomorrow. The most concrete impact is cryptography: data protected today may need to resist future breaking capabilities.
That difference matters. The decision today is not buying a quantum computer. It is understanding where the company uses cryptography, which data must remain confidential for many years, and which systems are hard to replace.
Post-quantum became planning, not curiosity
NIST leads post-quantum cryptography standardization and warns that quantum computers, even if years or decades away, may break many cryptographic systems used today. In 2024, NIST finalized the first post-quantum standards, creating a basis for migration.
That turns the topic into inventory. Which systems use TLS, VPN, digital signatures, encrypted storage, API keys, certificates, and long-term backups? Without a map, the company does not know what to migrate when the time comes.
Who should worry first
Companies with long-lived sensitive data should look first: healthcare, finance, legal, intellectual property, government, infrastructure, and sensitive contracts. The risk is often described as harvest now, decrypt later: someone stores data today while waiting for future capability.
For smaller businesses, the practical action is requiring critical vendors to have a post-quantum migration plan and keeping architecture cryptographically agile.
Avoid both extremes
The first extreme is treating quantum as fantasy and ignoring inventory. The second is buying an expensive project without a use case. The sensible position sits in the middle: map dependencies, track standards, and plan gradual replacement.
