WhatsApp Business changed its AI pricing: what it costs you now
Since August 1, WhatsApp Business's AI agent charges by token instead of a flat per-message fee. If you run automated support on WhatsApp, you need to understand the new math.

The WhatsApp bill changed shape
Since August 1, 2026, Meta Business Agent — the AI agent running inside WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram — switched to charging by processed token, at $2.00 per million tokens, instead of the flat per-message fee it used before. In practice, a typical conversation consumes 20,000 to 25,000 tokens, which works out to roughly 4 to 5 cents per message the agent delivers.
Before, businesses running automated support on WhatsApp paid separately: one fee for message delivery, another (sometimes from a different vendor) for AI processing. Now both charges collapse into a single token-based meter.
Why this matters even for a small business
A small business using a chatbot or AI assistant on WhatsApp to answer questions, confirm orders, or book appointments feels this kind of cost shift directly — it's a recurring operating expense, not a one-time investment. There's a second change already confirmed too: starting October 1, 2026, Meta reinstates fees for non-template service messages, a charge that had been suspended for two years. That means the cost of serving customers over WhatsApp is rising on two fronts this year, not just one.
What to check before the bill surprises you
Three things worth reviewing right away: confirm with whoever manages your business's WhatsApp Business account (internal team or outside vendor) whether the agent is already on token-based pricing, not the old flat fee. Then, estimate how many AI conversations your business generates per month and multiply by the average token count — that gives a real sense of the new monthly cost instead of finding out from the invoice. Finally, map how many non-template service messages your business currently sends, since that's the charge coming back in October.
Automation is still worth it — it just needs the right math
None of this means dropping automated support on WhatsApp. It means measuring the real cost before expanding its use, and deciding with data whether it's still worth keeping everything automated or whether some conversations are better handled by a person again.
