Automatic cloud provisioning: savings or hidden cost?
Autoscaling and automatic provisioning save money when they have limits, metrics, and owners. Without that, they grow the bill quietly.

Automatic does not mean economical
Automatic provisioning helps when it follows real demand. It can also multiply resources because of a bug, a misunderstood spike, a stuck queue, or the wrong metric.
Autoscaling needs limits, budget, alerts, and review. Without that, the company discovers the incident in the bill.
Choose the right metric
Scaling by CPU works for some workloads. For others, queue depth, latency, concurrency, or error rate says more. The metric needs to reflect user experience and operating cost.
The Datadog State of Containers and Serverless found that 46% of unscaled workloads had multiple significant CPU spikes per day. There is lost efficiency when scaling is absent, but risk when scaling exists without criteria.
Limit explosions
Set ceilings by service, environment, and region. Test environments should not scale like production. Internal jobs should not compete with checkout, customer service, or critical systems.
It also helps to separate horizontal scaling, queues, and graceful degradation. Every spike does not need to become more infrastructure.

The Flexera 2026 State of the Cloud reports estimated waste of 29% in IaaS and PaaS. Automatic provisioning without FinOps is a fast way to waste.
Each scaling adjustment should appear in cost per business unit. If the bill rose and experience did not improve, something is wrong.
