Cloud-native is an operating model
Building a cloud-native team does not mean hiring people who know a specific tool. It means forming a group that can ship software, operate production, control cost, and learn from incidents.
The team needs autonomy, but autonomy without standards becomes variation without control.
Start with essential responsibilities
At the beginning, someone needs to own platform, someone application, someone security, and someone operations. In small companies that may be the same person, but the responsibilities still need to exist.
More specialized roles can come later: SRE, platform engineer, cloud architect, FinOps, and application security.
A minimum platform prevents reinvention
Create deployment templates, standard observability, secrets management, secure pipelines, cost tagging, and bounded environments. This reduces repeated effort and gives product work more room.
The CNCF Annual Cloud Native Survey treats Kubernetes and cloud native as increasingly connected to AI workloads, while also pointing to maturity, culture, and alignment as real differences.
Skills are operational risk
The SoftwareOne Cloud Skills Report says 95% of respondents feel negative impact from the lack of cloud skills. Hiring helps, but it does not replace internal tracks and documented standards.
The team needs to learn together using the company's own environment.
