WhatsApp Business gets a cheaper category

The change that could lower your bill

In April 2026, Meta rolled out a WhatsApp Business API update with a new conversation category called "utility" — covering any business-initiated message directly tied to a transaction the customer already has underway, like order confirmations, delivery updates, or appointment reminders. This category is typically priced lower than marketing conversations.

A business that currently classifies this kind of message as "marketing" — even though it's a transaction update, not an offer — may be paying more than it needs to.

Why it's worth reviewing your categorization now

WhatsApp Business messaging costs had already been rising on other fronts this year, including the AI agent's token-based pricing in August. Correctly categorizing each message type — utility instead of marketing, where it applies — is one of the few cost-reduction levers a business controls directly, without depending on a change from Meta.

What to check on your account

Three things help you take advantage of the change: map the types of automated messages your business currently sends (confirmations, reminders, status updates) and check whether each is in the right category. Then talk to whoever manages your WhatsApp Business integration (in-house team or vendor) about reclassifying transaction messages still marked as marketing. And check your invoice the month after the change to confirm the new categorization actually reduced cost.
